I’m gearing up for some all vinyl events I have in the works, so as I break out those old and dusties in preparation, I thought I’d share the experience in an ongoing segment called Cover Story. It’s been a nostalgic trip back to a time when I used to read liner notes, know all the production credits, and admire album cover art. This selection isn’t a Top Album Covers Ever list or anything like that. It’s simply some covers that strike a chord with me one way or another. Stay tuned for weekly updates, cause I’ve got a lot of wax to share. For now, enjoy this first installment of Cover Story.
2Pac “I Get Around” Single 1993

This is an interesting cover because the content of the single and the imagery on the cover seem to be miles apart. Maybe it’s just me, but this lighthearted philanderers anthem doesn’t bring to mind images of a fiery inferno. Perhaps it’s a warning that getting around only gets you burned in the end.
Wu-Tang Clan “C.R.E.A.M.” Single 1994
There’s something odd about the one clan member…er, Wu-Tang Clan member laid out on the floor doing sit-ups while the others watch by candle light. Seriously, what exactly is going on here? Still, it’s one of the more menacing covers in Hip-Hop.
Big Pun “It’s So Hard” Single 2000

The Notorious B.I.G. “Juicy” 1994

Diet, exercise, personal trainers, stylists, and even plastic surgeons are what countless celebrities and well-to-do citizens may employ to maintain their sex appeal. Clearly, the Punisher and Biggie chose different routes. Yet each yielded songs that get women in the club all worked, up even to this very day. Kudos to those responsible for putting these ugly mugs front and center. No amount of money or sit-ups can take the place of confidence.
